Radon Mitigation Process

  • DESIGN AND PLANNING | Based on the radon testing results, a mitigation system is designed and tailored to your specific needs.

  • INSTALLATION PREPARATION | The area where the radon mitigation system will be installed will be prepared. This may involve sealing any cracks, creating access points, and ensuring proper ventilation.

  • SYSTEM INSTALLATION | The system will be installed by a Canadian National Radon Proficiency Program (C-NRPP) certified radon  professional following the designed plan. The most common method is sub-slab depressurization, which involves creating a suction point in the foundation, inserting a pipe, and connecting a fan to draw radon gas out from beneath the building.

  • PIPING AND VENTING | The pipe from the suction point will be extended upwards and vented outside where the radon gas can be safely released into the outdoor air.

  • SEALING AND VENTILATION | Proper sealing and insulation is employed to prevent radon gas from re-entering the building through cracks and openings.

  • SYSTEM TESTING AND ACTIVATION | Once the installation is complete, the radon mitigation system will be tested to ensure it is operating as intended.

  • POST INSTALLATION FOLLOW UP | After the system is activated, it is recommended to periodically perform radon testing to verify the effectiveness of the mitigation system and ensure radon levels remain within acceptable limits.

Your Radon Mitigation Questions Answered!

What is Radon?

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that can seep into buildings from the ground. The World Health Organization (WHO) has classified radon as a Class 1 Carcinogen. It is colorless, odorless, and tasteless, making it difficult to detect without specialized equipment. Exposure to high levels of radon over time can increase the risk of lung cancer. For more information about the health risks associated with radon, visit Health Canada's Radon webpage.

Why is Radon Mitigation Necessary?

Radon mitigation is necessary to reduce indoor radon levels to safe levels. According to the Canadian Cancer Society, high radon levels pose a serious health risk to occupants, as prolonged exposure can lead to lung cancer. Mitigation systems are designed to effectively remove radon gas from buildings, thereby protecting the health of residents. Learn about the different radon mitigation techniques from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

How Do I Know if My Home has High Radon Levels?

The only way to know for sure if your home has high radon levels is to conduct a radon test. Radon testing kits are readily available and can be purchased online, from Spectra Radon, or from local hardware stores. It is recommended to test your home every few years, especially if you have never tested it before or if there have been significant changes to the structure of the building (such as developing a basement). Contact Spectra Radon to find radon testing kits or learn more about our radon testing solutions.

What Does Radon Mitigation Involve?

Radon mitigation involves the installation of specialized systems that effectively remove radon gas from indoor environments. These systems typically include a radon vent pipe, a fan, and a sealing mechanism to prevent radon from entering the building. The specific mitigation technique used will depend on factors such as the construction of the building and the severity of the radon problem. Explore different radon mitigation systems and techniques at The American Lung Association.

How Much Does Radon Mitigation Cost?

The cost of radon mitigation can vary depending on factors such as the size and layout of the building, the type of mitigation system required, and the extent of the radon problem. It is recommended to obtain quotes from multiple radon mitigation companies to compare prices and services offered. While the initial cost of mitigation may seem significant, it is a worthwhile investment in the long-term health and safety of occupants. Contact Spectra Radon to get a personalized quote for radon mitigation services.

Is Radon Mitigation Covered by Homeowners Insurance?

In some cases, radon mitigation may be covered by homeowners insurance policies. However, coverage can vary depending on the insurance provider and the terms of the policy. It is recommended to review your insurance policy or consult with your insurance provider to determine if radon mitigation is covered. Additionally, some radon mitigation companies offer financing options or assistance with insurance claims. Learn more about insurance coverage for radon mitigation from The American Association of Insurance Services (AAIS), or the Canadian Real Estate Association (CREA).

How Long Does Radon Mitigation Take?

The duration of radon mitigation depends on factors such as the size of the building, the complexity of the mitigation system, and the accessibility of the installation site. In most cases, radon mitigation can be completed within a day or two. However, more extensive mitigation projects may take longer. It is recommended to consult with a radon mitigation specialist to determine the expected timeline for your specific project. Contact Spectra Radon to get a personalized quote for radon mitigation services.

Can I Install a Radon Mitigation System Myself?

While it is possible to install a radon mitigation system yourself, it is not recommended unless you have the necessary knowledge, skills, specialized diagnostic equipment, and experience. Improper installation can be ineffective and may even exacerbate radon levels in some cases. It is best to hire a professional radon mitigation company that is certified and experienced in installing mitigation systems. Find certified radon mitigation professionals in your area at Canadian National Radon Proficiency Program (C-NRPP)

How Soon Should I Install a Radon Mitigation System?

According to Health Canada, if the long-term radon measurement results are greater than 600 Bq/m3, then remedial action is recommended within 1 year. If the long-term measurement results are between 200 Bq/m3 and 600 Bq/m3, then remedial action is recommended within 2 years.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) recommends radon mitigation when the radon level is at or above 148 Bq/m3.

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends radon mitigation when the radon levels exceeds 100 Bq/m3.
